Drug shortages in US emergency rooms on the rise

A new study shows U.S. emergency rooms are increasingly running short on medications, including many that are needed for life-threatening conditions. Since 2008, the number of shortages has risen by more than 400 percent, researchers found. Half of all emergency room shortages were for life-saving drugs, and for one in 10 there were no available substitutes, they report in Academic Emergency Medicine.

U.S. judge upholds NSA phone surveillance program

Did we expect otherwise? A US judge has just ruled the NSA’s program that collects records of millions of Americans’ phone calls is lawful, rejecting a challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union to the controversial counter-terrorism program. Friday’s decision by U.S. District Judge William Pauley in Manhattan diverges from a December 16 ruling by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington, D.C., who said the “almost Orwellian” program was likely unconstitutional.

McCain blasts US-Russia agreement, it won’t shift momentum

On Tuesday Sen John McCain blasted the agreement reached between the U.S. and Russia for Syria to hand over its chemical weapons, saying that the Obama administration backed into the compromise and that it won’t end the country’s bloody civil war.

“I wish I could see the recent agreement between Russia and the United States to rid the Assad regime of its chemical weapons as major breakthrough,” the Republican senator from Arizona told the Council of Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C. “Unfortunately, I cannot.”
