Priebus reportedly considering RNC re-election bid

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is reportedly mulling another term as the head of the GOP. Priebus, who was first elected in 2011, has been telling friends and allies in recent weeks he’s considering running for re-election, Politico reported Monday.

The longest-serving chairman of the RNC approached Henry Barbour, an ally and nephew of former RNC Chairman Haley Barbour, at the Republican National Convention last month in Cleveland and said he was thinking about returning to the position, according to Politico.

“He wants to keep his options open for running for re-election,” Barbour told the news outlet.

Priebus is increasingly likely to see re-election.

“Reince should definitely run,” Steve Duprey, an RNC member from New Hampshire who has made personal appeals to Priebus, told Politico. “He’s the right guy for two more years of a hard job.”

Neither Priebus nor an RNC spokesperson responded to requests by the news outlet about the speculation.

An election in the RNC will be held after the conclusion of the presidential race, and will be decided by the 168 members and state party chairs who make up the committee.
