Six people arrested by UK police over alleged terror offences after a family was stopped at the Turkey-Syria border have been released without charge. Five people aged between 21 and 47 were arrested three weeks ago on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Obama defends pursuit of sweeping trade pact

On Friday Obama defended his pursuit of a sweeping trade pact as good for American workers in a global economy, dismissing fierce opposition from his own party as a “ratification of the status quo.” Earlier in the day, Michigan Rep. Sander Levin, the senior Democrat of House Ways and Means Committee, declared he was “out to defeat” the legislation because, he said, it would cost U.S. jobs and damage the environment. Only a few Democrats in the House, Levin predicted, would support the legislation.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, ‘mastermind of Islamic State in Iraq,’ reportedly killed

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, a supporter of the Islamic State and former army commander under the Saddam Hussein regime, was reportedly killed Friday in a military operation in Iraq. Al-Douri was called the King of Clubs by the United States in its deck of most-wanted Iraqis during the Iraqi War. The former Baath Party leader subsequently led the Naqshabandi Army, a Sunni militant group that has aligned with the IS.
